Shelterbox Challenge 07

Four members of High Wycombe Round Table 155 remember 14 and 15 April 2007 as they they took part in the Shelterbox Challenge on

Dartmoor.

Shelterbox is a Rotary charity that provides boxes of equipment (which provides shelter and warmth for up to ten people for a prolonged period) to areas around the world which are hit by natural and other disasters.

The Challenge involves a team of four carrying a Shelterbox over a 30 mile organised route in

Dartmoor over two days.

The team from

High Wycombe (Jon Harvey, Chairman, Steven Brown, Membership Secretary and Honorary Members James Burt and Steve Neale) set about raising sponsorship and preparing for the physical challenge.

High Wycombe Round Table donated some of the proceeds from its annual Race Night to Shelterbox and the four team members held a street collection in

High Wycombe, with an actual Shelterbox, to raise awareness of Shelterbox.On Saturday 14 April at 9.00am all 25 teams left the start in Princetown,

Dartmoor in beautiful sunshine. The first challenge was to work out the best way carry a Shelterbox, along with approximately 25kg of contents which included a ten man tent and cooking equipment and food, and our own kit to enable us to camp on the Saturday night. At the end of Day 1 having walked about 17 miles across

Dartmoor for nearly nine hours in the sun

High Wycombe Round table were in 8^th place.

Another Round Table team were also taking place but the boys from Southgate Round Table dropped out during day one.During a rather damp Day 2, suffering with sore and blistered feet, the High Wycombe Round Table team walked about another 13 miles, taking just under six hours, but dropped a place to finish 9^th out of 18 teams that actually finished the Challenge.Whilst a very tough event it was a great experience of fun and friendship.
